The 2023 Field School will run in July 2023 for four weeks. The field school will offer students the experience of working with an archaeological research project that uses a variety of field methods to explore the medieval lordship of Moylurg in north County Roscommon.  Excavations will be continuing on the Rock of Lough Key, featured in Archaeology Magazine in the February 2020 issue!

In 2023 students will learn the basics of field excavation, including field planning and excavation as well as surveying using total stations and GPS systems. They will use a number of geophysical surveying tools, including electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and geoarchaeological lab studies.  Excavation work will focus on the medieval layers of the Rock of Lough Key.  Students will have hands on experience sorting and analyzing medieval artifacts from this very high status Gaelic site, and will be working with our zoo-archaeologist studying an extensive collection of butchered animal bones from the 8-14th century.

Students will also tour a number of archaeological sites in the north Roscommon area, including the islands of Lough Key, Boyle Abbey, Roscommon Castle, Rindoon Castle, Cruachan, and Carrowkeel.

The fees for the 2023 are set at $4300, and cover room, partial board, health insurance, onsite transportation and equipment. Tuition and college credit are available through Saint Louis University for an additional fee. Airfare and transportation from Dublin to Carrick-on-Shanon, additional travel on weekends, and weekend meals are not included.

Students are housed in nearby holiday homes that include bed linens, laundry facilities, and fully functional kitchens. Students cook meals collectively every evening, and are free on the weekends to journey to Dublin or Galway, which are short bus rides away.
